The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people. We are a non-profit that provides 24/7 life-saving support via phone, text, and chat. We also operate the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth and run innovative research, education, and advocacy programs. We’ve been saving lives every day for over 20 years.

Overview of the role

People are at the heart of The Trevor Project’s life-saving work. The Chief People Officer will lead all aspects of the organization’s culture and human capital strategy, ensuring that The Trevor Project attracts, develops, and retains an exceptional and diverse staff in an equitable and inclusive culture. The Chief People Officer will be responsible for leading and developing the organization’s overall People strategy, including recruiting; professional development; employee engagement; human resources; and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Overseeing a current team of 30 people, the Chief People Officer will lead the organization through a period of fast growth and international expansion, scaling the organization from 350 employees in the United States today, to over 600 employees around the world over the next 18 months.

Who you are

  • Experienced People Leader. You bring authenticity and a high degree of emotional intelligence along with significant leadership experience across people operations.  You have a track record of growing and developing diverse teams in a fast-paced, changing organization while building an inclusive and equitable working environment.  
  • Expert in Scaling. You have a track record of successfully leading and scaling teams and organizations in high-growth environments. You love working at a strategic level but are also happy to roll up your sleeves to address tactical and operational matters when needed, especially during periods of growth. You have experience developing innovative and forward-thinking talent strategies and initiatives.
  • Goal-Oriented.  As a strategic advisor and doer executing the organizational vision, you fully understand the organization and are able to see around corners where the organization might be headed. As a change agent with influencing ability, you will set ambitious goals for the People strategy and then deliver on them.
  • Data-Driven and Digitally Savvy. You are analytical and love to leverage data and technology to drive results, make processes more efficient, and support people across the organization.
  • Culture Carrier.  You set the bar for embodying organizational values and inspire others to do the same. You understand the nuances of diversity, equity, and inclusion work, and have leveraged these nuances to develop innovative programs in past roles. You have a track record of successfully enhancing and shaping organizational culture.
  • People Person. You love working with people and know how to excite them about our life-saving work. You are passionate about having a high-performing work culture and deeply value diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Collaborative.  You understand that the best way to meet and exceed goals is through outstanding teamwork. This includes working with and across diverse groups of people at all levels of the organization in an agile way, while communicating clearly and managing stakeholder expectations.

What you’ll do

  • Develop and oversee the execution of The Trevor Project’s overall People strategy, in coordination and collaboration with the leadership team
  • Lead all People and culture aspects of the organization’s global expansion to countries around the world
  • Manage a People team currently made up of 30 people based in the US, which will grow significantly with People team members in countries around the globe
  • Oversee the organization’s growing recruiting function, ensuring that The Trevor Project is hiring an exceptionally talented and diverse staff to meet the organization’s short- and long-term talent needs
  • Ensure that The Trevor Project is creating a best-in-class employee experience, including employee engagement; learning & development; and diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Deliver world-class performance management and professional development programs to ensure the organization is high-performing to meet the needs of LGBTQ youth
  • Oversee human resources, compensation, and benefit programs to support our team and attract and retain top talent
  • Ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion is embedded in all aspects of The Trevor Project’s work and culture
  • Embody the values and culture of The Trevor Project, speaking compellingly both internally and externally about the organization to inspire passion and excitement about our life-saving work
  • Nurture a collaborative, inclusive, remote-first culture that infuses equity, diversity, and inclusion into all aspects of the Trevor Project's work and environment
